Movie Premiere with Speaker and Discussion

AMERICAN VIOLET The amazing true story of Dee Roberts (Nicole Beharie), a 24-year-old African-American single mother of four young girls living in a small Texas town who is barely able to make ends meet, is the subject of this film. After a sweep of her housing project, the local district attorney (Michael O'Keefe) wrongly charges her as a drug dealer. She fights the unyielding criminal justice system, risking everything in a battle that forever changes her life and the court system. With Alfre Woodard, Tim Blake Nelson, Will Patton, and Xzibit. (PG13, 102 mins)

Speaking after film: Jennifer Bellamy, Legislative Counsel with the ACLU's D.C. Office who handles drug law reform and racial justice issues.

"A torn-from-the-headlines tale of institutional racism and injustice in the Lone Star State of not-so-long-ago, American Violet is certainly powerful."
-- Stephen Rae, Philadelphia Inquirer

"An ideal movie for an ideal time in America."
-- Jonathan Curiel, San Francisco Chronicle
