After a lengthy hibernation that commenced with the closing of the theater in March of 2020, the Naro Cinema announces our reopening on Friday, June 4 with an initial weekend of an eclectic mix of some of our favorite titles from yesteryear. Thom, Tench, Theresa, Atlanta, and the entire Naro staff have all missed connecting with our tight-knit movie community and sharing in conversation and everyday good cheer.
Let’s keep in mind that the speedy implementation of vaccines has allowed us to once again gather and for businesses and schools to reopen. We encourage everyone to stay safe, and first get a vaccine before joining us for a showing at the Naro. In keeping with our community safety practices, our Naro management will continue to follow the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the voluntary CinemaSafe guidelines developed by the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), and all state and county guidelines.
And to help provide a safer environment throughout the building, the theatre has made significant improvements during its temporary closure – including a thorough lobby renovation and deep cleaning of the entire theater, along with up-to-date maintenance of our HVAC system including air return filters. Our projection equipment has been upgraded for our state-of-the-art visual and audio presentation.
We will continue offering our marquee rentals for celebratory messages and private movie party rentals of the theater, along with a selection of films to stream online from our virtual cinema offerings available on our website. These are the activities that have sustained us during our closing and we’re indebted to our patrons’ strong showing of support during a difficult time for us all. It feels good to finally make it to the other side of the shutdown. But let’s not forget all those who weren’t so fortunate to do so. And remember the multitudes of humanity living in the global south who have little access to modern medicine and vaccinations and must still endure the worst effects of the pandemic.
The world is learning the difficult teaching that all of life is deeply interconnected. Our process of awakening can be nurtured by great art and inspirational movies both new and old. We can once again congregate and experience movies together – a public event in a darkened theater with an audience that’s fully focused on the widescreen. The best cinema has the power to transport us into a collective dream. These are the kinds of films we will continue to seek out and program for the Naro.
And at long last… “It’s showtime, folks!”
A retrospective of the great New Hollywood and more masterpieces of the 60s and 70s please, Easy Rider, The French Connection, Serpico, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange, The Swimmer etc. none of which I have seen on the big screen in a movie theater!
Great to be back in my favorite movie house:) Definitely in a “new normal”, but will there be a return of Non-fiction Wednesdays and the occasional (and always interesting) one-off Tuesday night screenings?
We shall see…thanks for being a fan of The Naro!
How about showing Bird Man of Alcatraz?
I just saw The Summer of Soul – so happy to return and even paid cash even though I still have two books in my wallet because I want you guys to bring in the $$$ to keep running. Hope to see some I missed over the pandemic and some new ones – Roadrunner (new) and Nomadland (missed it)
I’m so glad the Naro is open again – I missed experiencing great movies in a wonderful theater setting.
I do wish the Naro would show some of the academy award nominated and winning movies we all missed in the last year. Some of the movies you have offered for streaming look interesting as well. Not all of us are big fans of streaming. Please bring more movies to your theater to be enjoyed in the format they were made for.
Stand back, we’re on our way; back to our favorite cinema experience with our favorite cinema. Naro, you have been sorely missed.
Will you bring back the Rocky Horror Picture Show?
Would like to put a request in for Steel Magnolias
CANNOT WAIT! We’ll be there with bells on for In the Heights! (well, not literally bells- that would be distracting to other patrons. 😀
As the Gershwins would say “S’Wondrful”!
Remembering the wonderful movies you show and all the shining happy faces! Loving the sense of community engendered by your letter, Tench :-).
Remembering back when y’all began! 💕 (& practicing yoga next door) The Naro began in which year?
Sending love from Berkeley CA!
1977
I’m so excited!!!!! I’ve so missed the Naro this past year, especially the Flick It nights, the Late Night Frights in October (my favorite!), and during Oscar season when you have all those great indie Oscar nominees playing. I’m so incredibly happy you guys are reopening!!!!
So glad to hear of the The Naro reviving !
It is a Community Treasure.
Thank you for the great message upon reopening. Every thing and one is, indeed, connected. Knowing that you are still firmly rooted in our community is such a pleasure. Can’t wait to get some Naro popcorn and take in a great film!
So happy about your upcoming reopening!!!You have been sorely missed.
Visiting the NARO is one of the things I have missed most in all this…can’t wait to return for your revealing and inspiring documentaries.
I can’t tell you how happy and excited I was to read about the good news of the Naro’s reopening!!! I immediately shared it with my friends and can’t wait to attend June 4th film! Vive la Naro 🙂
That is great news. I’ll be there.
So looking forward to the return. Nothing like great movies, great popcorn and this great old theater. See you soon!!!
I have missed the Naro so much!! Not just the movies – which are notably the BEST – but the community building spirit the Naro generates. Welcome back🥰
I’m looking forward to you weekend films, (offered with coffee and bagels), loved the discussions following the films. Will this be happening soon?
Yippee!
So happy about your upcoming reopening!!!You have been sorely missed.
Dear Tench, This is such good news. Glad you all made it through. Appreciate your plug for vaccinations. All the best as things get re-started. Still hope we can see a film there before too many moons pass. Hugs, Andrea
THANK YOU!! I am so happy that you will open again. Life has not been the same without you…I am hungry for your good popcorn and your movies
Will “The Seventh Seal” be among your selections in the near future?
If not, perhaps it should be! Tee-hee. 😉
