Elvis
The long-awaited epic biographical drama premieres, directed by Baz Luhrman (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, The Great Gatsby) and starring Austin Butler as Elvis and Tom Hanks as his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The film chronicles the life and career of Elvis from his childhood days to his emergence as the world’s most famous rock and roll singer. (PG-13, 2h 39m)
“A fizzy, delirious, impishly energized, compulsively watchable 2-hour-and-39-minute fever dream — a spangly pinwheel of a movie that converts the Elvis saga we all carry around in our heads into a lavishly staged biopic-as-pop-opera.” – Owen Gleiberman, Variety
“The King lives!” – Peter Howell, Toronto Star
“When Austin Butler shakes his hips in Elvis’s first gig as a full-blown rock ‘n’ roller, it’s like watching two stars being born.” Philip De Semlyen, Time Out

Sunflowers
Wednesday, July 13th at 7:15pm
Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers are among his most famous works, and are some of the most iconic paintings in the world. In an extraordinary exhibition, the Van Gogh Museum took a new and revealing look at the five publicly-owned versions of sunflowers in a vase. And once again, the Van Gogh museum opened its doors exclusively to Exhibition on Screen. The Van Gogh Museum has opened its doors exclusively to Exhibition on Screen, to go beyond the surface and explore the many questions and mysteries that surround these seminal works. (1h 25m)
“A fascinating opportunity to explore and celebrate these still vibrant works, this film ultimately tells us much more about the thought processes of this fascinating artist than any number of biographies and biopics.” – Jennie Kermode, Eye for Film
Introduction by Lloyd DeWitt, Chief Curator of Chrysler Museum

Tribute to Mal Vincent
Mal’s Movies 2022! A series of classic films in July and August hosted by friends of Mal Vincent on Monday evenings. (With repeat screenings on Tuesday afternoons without hosts.)
As you know, Mal Vincent passed away last November at the age of 83. As you also know, Mal was irreplaceable, whether as the Virginian-Pilot’s film critic for more than half a century (his annual Oscar picks were always an event), as a guest on countless local radio broadcasts, or just as a friend sharing one of his latest Hollywood exploits over the phone. It was Mal’s wish that his yearly festival of classic films at the Naro would continue, and so we have assembled a group of local celebrities and cinephiles to step in as hosts for some of Mal’s favorite films from past festivals, as well as for some he had planned to share in the future. No one can fill his shoes, but we’ll do our best to do justice to his memory and to the movies he adored.
You can see the full festival screening calendar with trailers here.
