The Capote Tapes
Written in his later life, ‘Answered Prayers’, an epic literary portrait of New York’s glittering jet-set society, was meant to be Truman Capote’s greatest masterpiece. Instead, it sparked the downfall of the iconic author of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s‘ and ‘In Cold Blood‘. Through never-before-heard audio archives and interviews with Capote’s famous friends and infamous enemies, this new documentary reveals the rise and fall of one of America’s most influential writers and public figures. Featuring interviews with Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cornel West, and Naomi Klein, The Big Scary “S” Word explores the rich history of the American socialist movement. Weaving together hidden episodes of history and verité footage, the film shows that, contrary to popular belief, socialism is in fact deeply American and led to popular government programs such as public schools and Medicare. Activists and journalists explain how the 2008 financial crisis, the Wall Street bailout, the Occupy Movement, and the ascension of politicians like Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez have pushed a new generation to embrace the language of socialism. (82 mins)

How far do you have to travel to find yourself? And what sacrifices are you willing to make to get there? Veiga Grétarsdóttir is the first person in the world to attempt to kayak the 1,300 mile circumference of Iceland, counter-clockwise and against the current, an achievement that has been compared to climbing K2. Veiga’s personal journey is no less remarkable. She was born 44 years ago as a boy in a fishing village on the far west coast of Iceland. By the age of 38 Veigar had a wife and family but decided that she could no longer live as a man and decided to undergo gender reassignment. The inner struggle for Veigar to become Veiga was a journey as difficult if not more so than the solo kayak expedition she undertakes. These two stories of conflict and struggle are intertwined as the film follows her amazing 103 day journey around Iceland, with the magical, rugged coastline of the country a backdrop to the story of Veiga’s transition. (88 mins)

Lourdes

A stunningly beautiful mountainous village in the Southwest foothills of the Pyrenees went from a sleepy scenic town to a sacred wonder after 1858, when a 14-year-old peasant girl claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in a remote grotto. Today, the town is second only to Paris in the number of annual visitors (6 million), part venerated shrine, part Disneyland (shops selling bottled holy water and Virgin Mary-related tchotchkes). Vast processions of people seeking a miracle fuel a small army of care-givers who accompany them. These pilgrims are a surprising cross-section of humanity: accident victims, the terminally ill, an overweight and bullied teenager, a contingent of aging Paris prostitutes, et alia. Lourdes is an insightful meditation on the human capacity for empathy and hope, and the mystery of religious faith in the face of profound tribulation. In French with subtitles. (92 mins)
‘You’ll feel like you’ve been to the French town that has become one of the most important religious pilgramage destinations in the world… often deeply moving” – The Hollywood Reporter
“A film of dignity, charity, and profundity… hope is made palpable.” – America Magazine
