A Fantastic Woman

Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Film

Played by international star Daniela Vega, Marina is a trans woman who works as a waitress and nightclub singer. Her life is turned upside-down when her older boyfriend Orlando suddenly dies. Marina must confront the family members when they arrive for the funeral. They view her as an aberration and a perversion, and are suspicious of their unconventional relationship and her involvement in Orlando’s death. So Marina struggles for the right to be herself. She battles the very same forces that she has spent a lifetime fighting just to become the woman she is now – a complex, strong, forthright and fantastic woman. From Chile. In Spanish with subtitles. (R, 100 mins)

“A Fantastic Woman is at once a straightforward story of self-assertion and defiance and a complex study of the nuances of identity. “ – A.O. Scott, The New York Times

“Exquisitely compassionate portrait of a trans woman whose mourning for a lost lover is obstructed at every turn by individual and institutional prejudice.” – Guy Lodge, Variety
