Naro Expanded Video presents a special screening of Ali Abbasi‘s award winning, divisive, true-crime thriller HOLY SPIDER at Norfolk’s historic Naro Cinema. A journalist descends into the dark underbelly of the Iranian holy city of Mashhad as she investigates the serial killings of sex workers by the so called “Spider Killer”, who believes he is cleansing the streets of sinners. Admission is free courtesy of the Old Dominion University Libraries.

Following the film will be a discussion with Old Dominion University professors Najmeh Moradiyan-Rizi and Amanda Petersen. Dr. Moradiyan-Rizi is Assistant Professor of Film Studies at Old Dominion University. Her research falls at the intersection of film studies; Iranian and Middle Eastern studies; and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. Prof. Amanda Petersen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice at Old Dominion University whose focus is on racial inequality, abolitionist theory, critical carceral studies, & policymaking.
