I’m Still Here

Oscar Winner – Best Int’l Feature Film!

Based on the 2015 memoir by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, this film tells the story of how the murder of his father, Ruben Paiva, (played by Selton Mello), during Brazil’s military dictatorship in 1971, affected his family’s life, especially his mother, Eunice Paiva (played by Fernanda Torres). She became a lawyer and prominent activist for human rights for victims of political repression and later a fierce advocate for the rights of Brazil’s indigenous peoples. The film premiered at the 81st Venice Film Festival winning the Best Screenplay award. The film received a Best Actress Golden Globe award for Torres, and has been nominated for three Academy Awards this year, including Best Picture, becoming the first Brazilian film to be nominated in that category. (In Portuguese with English subtitles, PG-13, 2h 15m)

“By highlighting Eunice’s role as a parent, Salles pushes viewers toward considering the mundanity of living under a dictatorship — and the gnawing nightmare of lacking control in the face of obvious evil. “ – David Sims, The Atlantic

“Fact-based family dramas don’t come more intense or indelible than Walter Salles’s emotional powerhouse starring Golden Globe best actress winner Fernanda Torres as a Brazilian wife and mother who fights a military dictatorship to save her flesh and blood” – Peter Travers, ABC News

“This is not just a movie about a strong woman, though it certainly is that. It’s also about what authoritarian regimes do to keep people in line, the totalitarian tactic of making people doubt what they know they’ve seen by insisting on unabashed lies.” Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times
