One of our favorite filmmakers, Werner Herzog, interviews one of the world’s greatest living politicians, Mikhail Gorbachev, the eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev achieved three remarkable accomplishments: negotiations with the U.S. to reduce nuclear weapons, cessation of Soviet control of Eastern Europe and the reunification of Germany, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. All of this in only six years! Now 88, living outside Moscow and battling illness, we’re offered a last chance to learn about true diplomacy from a world statesman. (92 mins)
Post-film discussion led by Lawrence Wilkerson, retired US Army Colonel and the former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell.
“Not since Klaus Kinski has Herzog aimed his camera at such an uncontrollable subject, and that includes the erupting peaks of ‘Into the Volcano’ and the radioactive crocodiles in ‘The Cave of Forgotten Dreams.’” – David Ehrlich, IndieWire
“Werner Herzog’s documentary is a rare example of the arch ironist’s capacity to be awed not by nature but by man.” – Chris Barsanti, Slant Magazine
