90th Anniversary of the Colley Theater Opening!

The Colley Theater (now the Naro) opens in 1936Join us for a celebration of Norfolk’s oldest still-running theater, which started its life as the Colley in 1936. (It became The Naro in the 1960s and The Naro Expanded Cinema in 1977.) To honor the occasion, we will be screening a classic screwball ensemble comedy from that year: My Man Godfrey. In the depths of the Depression, a party game brings dizzy socialite Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard) to the city dump where she meets Godfrey (William Powell), a derelict, and ends by hiring him as family butler. He finds the Bullocks to be the epitome of idle rich, and nutty as the proverbial fruitcake. Soon, the dramatizing Irene is in love with her ‘protege’…who feels strongly that a romance between servant and employer is out of place, regardless of that servant’s mysterious past. The film was nominated for 6 Academy Awards, and in 2023 Time magazine selected it as on of the “100 Best Movies of the Last 10 Decades,” placing it among the “greatest romantic comedies” to come out of that “decade full of terrific ones.” (1936, 1h 35m)
