Filmmaker Michael Showalter’s (The Big Sick) new drama is an intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 1970s and 80s, Tammy Faye (Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Jim Bakker (Andrew Garfield), rose from humble beginnings to create PTL, the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance and prosperity. Tammy Faye was legendary for her indelible eyelashes, her idiosyncratic singing, and her eagerness to embrace people from all walks of life. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire. (PG-13, 126 mins)
“While Showalter relishes the camp value of the film’s costumes, makeup, and set design, make no mistake: This is a sympathetic portrait.” – Katie Rife, AV Club
“As Tammy Faye, Chastain delivers a career-best performance, completely transforming into this larger-than-life TV figure. Without a single false note, Chastain embodies everything that made Tammy Faye such a remarkable character to watch.” – Mina Takla, AwardsWatch
