Film Break Society Presents: The Spook Who Sat by the Door
Thursday, February 26th at 8pm!
When a United States senator’s right-wing swing on “law and order” alienates his black constituents, his team cooks up a PR stunt to recruit America’s first black secret agent. Answering the call is Dan Freeman (Lawrence Cook), an undercover black nationalist who learns the tricks of the trade at the CIA, and then leads an armed insurgency against the U.S. government. Blowback is beautiful. Based on the novel by former foreign-service operator Sam Greenlee, director Ivan Dixon’s follow-up to TROUBLE MAN (1972) sneaks its live-wire politics past the gate through smart use of genre: explosive action, slick dialogue, and music by Herbie Hancock. (1973, PG, 1h 42m)
“There is nothing that comes close to this movie in terms of black radicalism.” – Tim Reid, 2004
