Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers

Wednesday, April 9th at 7pm!

200 years after its opening and a century after acquiring its first Van Gogh works, the National Gallery is hosting the UK’s biggest ever Van Gogh exhibition. Van Gogh is not only one of the most beloved artists of all time, but perhaps the most misunderstood. The exhibition covers the two years and three months that Van Gogh spent in Arles and at the asylum in Saint-Remy in the south of France, painting prolifically, almost unstoppably, in an ecstasy (sometimes agony) of creative fervor. An actor reads from Vincent’s letters to his art dealer brother Theo, but there are, mercifully, no hammy period recreations. (1h 30m)

In-person film introduction by Mia Laufer Ph.D., Chrysler Museum Irene Leache Curator of European Art

“…nothing quite captures the thrill of being in the room with the paintings themselves, but this excellent, insightful, immaculately filmed documentary comes pretty damn close.”  – The Times (UK)

“Van Gogh can seem overly familiar, but — as in  Poets and Lovers  — there is always something new to see and perhaps, moreover, to feel.” – Emily LaBarge, New York Times
